So what is it that we offer as part of our lawn care programme, and how is it going to improve your lawn? What is it we need to do and when? Here is the quick rundown of our service. If you like what you read or want to hear more then 1, you might need to get out more, and 2, you need our free lawn assessment.
1) Spring Application (March / April)
To start the lawn care season, we apply a granular fertiliser which will aid growth after winter rain will have depleted the soil of nitrogen. This fertiliser will feed the grass over 10-12 weeks, proving no sudden flush of growth for you to combat with the mower. This fertiliser when combined with correct mowing practices (height, frequency, blade sharpness) will improve the density and colour of your lawn. On top of our turf food, we will also apply a weed and moss control when we visit.
Scarification (Late Feb / March / April) / Renovation (April / May / June)
Sometimes, for new jobs, chemical applications aren't going to touch underlying issues. We may recommend some more extensive work during spring. This can be pretty heavy work for us, so we only carry this out at the correct time or year with materials used on fine turf surfaces for the best results.
2) Early Summer Application (May / June)
After our spring visit has given your lawns the health kick they needed, we'll be back two months later just as the first granular fertiliser is on its way out. Your lawn is growing at its fastest at this time of year, and requires further nutrition to continue to support the growth of the plant. Regular mowing will facilitate the thickening of the turf when combined with our products. With strong growth, this is the optimal time to utilise our main weed control product. Our professional weed control products are neither able to be purchased by the public, or used by anyone without the correct spraying certification.
3) Late Summer Application (July / August)
Our final granular product is applied two months later, a product loaded with slow release nitrogen to support the lawn through potential drought conditions and occasionally hot late summer / early autumn weather. This application contains a healthy level of potassium to add strength to the roots and improves the plant's defences prior to the risk of autumn disease. We then apply a final weed control - spot treating any tough weeds.
Renovation (late Aug / Sept) Scarification (Sept - mid-Oct)
This is where the heaviest work is! This time of year provides us with the ideal conditions to carry out anything from the heaviest of renovation work, through to the more common lighter annual scarification (early / mid-Oct) for many of our customers. Over half of our lawn care customers have an annual scarification which includes a post-scarification treatment which we tailor to the lawn - examples including a moss control, a liquid seaweed, or a light overseed. We work overtime during this period to make sure that this work is completed in good time before growth and therefore recovery slows.
Hollow-tine Aeration (late Oct)
If when assessing your lawn we find that the soil profile is very compact, we quickly get on with addressing this issue while there is still warmth in the soil, before conditions start to favour the development of moss.
4) Fracture-tine Aeration + Late Autumn Application (Nov + Dec)
This is maybe the most important visit of the year for many of our lawns. We love aeration. Only a minority of chemical elements are mobile in the soil - we must aerate in order to truly stimulate root development. By fracture-tining, a series of heavy duty tines create deep slits for maximum gaseous exchange, and keeps your lawn free-draining as the wettest weather of the year arrives. We do this now while there is still some warmth in the soil (it takes its time cooling down, and also to warm up), allowing roots to make best use of the air space, and before some lawns are holding too much water to take a heavy machine. After aerating, we make our fourth fertiliser application for further support for the grass. We have the experience to mix a specialist liquid fertiliser dependent on how your lawn is doing, and how the weather conditions are. November and December could bring anything from 15c steady growth to freezing conditions - we need to be flexible at this stage to achieve the strongest possible turf.
5) Winter Application (Jan + Feb)
We don't forget about our lawns through the winter. During our coldest darkest months moss is never far away in our part of the world. We apply a moss control which will keep moss in check while the grass is dormant which will also give a winter green-up and protect from disease, setting up your lawn perfectly for spring.
Further Fracture-tine Aeration (Jan + Feb)
Yes, more aeration! That's how beneficial it is. Similar to mowing, your lawn can't get enough. We have to pick our soil conditions wisely, but we will aerate for a second time at a reduced rate for those customers who love it as much as us. Aeration encourages the natural breakdown of thatch - we may just get away without scarifying if we're smart about our thatch control and other lawn care practices. Many sports surfaces are aerated more often than then are fertilised - why is lawn care different? Unfortunately it's the profitability of chemicals rather than turf health. We will push what is best for your lawn.
